Exhibition Statement
The artwork included in this exhibition was created in response to the tragedy befallen on the community of Sandy Hook, Connecticut in 2012. Each collage and drawing dually summons rage toward the perpetrator and empathy for the victims, families, friends, school staff, students, and emergency responders who all share a connection to the event.
Since the attack involved the use of a military-grade weapons and caused significant devastation comparable to that of a battle zone, it was important to use other artists’ criticism of acts of war as a basis from which to record vivid reactions to the violence. Goya’s emblematic print folio “The Disasters of War,” the work of German expressionists post World War I, and modernists who recorded the aftermath of World War II were references for this portfolio.
