Exhibition Statement
Blurring the lines between pictured space and volume, Jane Winfield’s playfully frustrated abstract paintings are an argument between unsightliness and allure. Using industrial and traditional painting materials, she negotiates her way through the spontaneity of unpredictable, volatile substances with flirtatious violence and good- natured irreverence. The resulting images are knowingly at odds with themselves, often simultaneously combining grotesque, slimy, or crumbling surfaces juxtaposed by luxurious color fields and areas of graceful reprieve. The results are awkward, humorous, revealing, and sometimes, even human.
