Exhibition Statement
My drawings explore the proliferation of violence in our culture and the memories of the people left behind after a callous crime. My imagery is drawn from public government information websites, press accounts of violence, and situations experienced by friends and family. I select incidents that shock me because of their brutality and/or impunity. Common elements in my works include juxtaposed outlined silhouettes that built up busy narratives. The elusive and residual qualities of graphite allow me to erase and draw over and over on canvas. The ephemeral quality of graphite speaks of the physical vulnerability of violence and the remains of erased layers allude to the remembrance of victims.
